Glasgow park parcel could cost county $12 million
Buying more than 230 acres for parkland in Glasgow could cost New Castle
County as much as $12 million.
The four Barczewski family members who own the property will give the county
until Monday to make a deal, representatives for the county and family said.
Otherwise, the county risks losing it to other potential buyers who have
offered more, they said.
The family rejected the county's $9.6 million offer in April to buy the 232
acres of residentially zoned land north of U.S. 40 and west of Del. 896. The
land is across from the new park the county already plans to build in the
area.
Instead, the family wants the county to pay $12 million for the 232 acres,
plus four acres zoned for commercial use. That amount is $1 million less
than an appraisal obtained by the landowners, according to figures provided
by the county Special Services Department.
Appraisals obtained by the county put the value of the land somewhere
between $5.9 million and $12.8 million. However, the landowners' attorney
said that first figure is based on incorrect information.
