Christian Nursing Service History Christian Nursing Service Founded in 1968 During the summer of 1968, eight women from the Crawfordsville community gathered with one purpose in mind – to establish a visiting home care and nursing service in the neighborhood of Milligan Memorial Pres. Church. Rev. Charlotte Hotopp Zachary convened the meeting. She was then the pastor at Milligan Memorial and had seen the need in the church community for health care services for those who could not get out and get services elsewhere. Acting on the need she saw, Rev. Zachary went to work. Along with Molly Cooper, Mary Vi Leaming (then Montgomery County Public Health Nurse), Dr. Mary Ludwig, Katherine Milligan, Irene Pierson, Carolyn Snyder, and Dorothy Stenger, Rev. Zachary began to organize Christian Nursing Service. The plans that developed for the organization included a Well Baby Clinic, Visiting Nursing Service, Meals on Wheels, and Telecheck. It was the plan of these women – and an ambitious plan it was – to provide all of these services with donations received from local individuals, churches, and organizations. They did not intend to seek or accept government funding, and to this date have used no government funds to support the programs of Christian Nursing Service. From the dreams of these 8 women grew an organization that is dedicated to providing health care for the low income community and neighborly ministry to the needs of others, particularly paying attention to the well-being and nourishment of those who are ill and shut-in. From its beginning in 1968, CNS has provided a Well Baby Clinic, Visiting Nursing Service, Meals on Wheels and Telecheck. Other programs have been added over the years including the Adult Health Clinic, Clothing Closet, Coats for Kids, and Angels In Tow. Clinic services have expanded beyond "well baby" services like physical check-ups and immunizations to referrals for sick children to local physicians who cooperate to provide medical services to these patients at reduced cost or no cost. CNS also provides funds to low income individuals to assist them in paying for necessary medical services. Dr. Mary Ludwig volunteered her services as physician from 1968 until 1988. More recently, Dr. Richard Eggers, Dr. Tim Brown, Dr. Richard Miller, and Dr. Keith Baird and others have served as physicians. Many thanks to the Athens Medical Group After Hours Clinic for past treatment of the referrals from our clinic. The clinic is run by a nurse manager, Michele Thompson. CNS has been richly blessed with financial support from the Crawfordsville community, from individuals, churches, local trust funds, the Montgomery County Community Foundation (MCCF). and the Montgomery County Medical Care Trust, Inc. We have also been richly blessed with thousands of hours of service from volunteers who have served on our Board and our committees, staffed our clinics, kept track of our finances, and, in general, answered every call for service to our organization. Thanks to you all. Supporting Organizations Montgomery County Community Foundation Neighborhood Link Terms of Use © 1997 - 2006 Neighborhood Link, Inc. |
