KANDO (Kaul Avenue Neighborhood Development Organization)
July 2009 KANDO Meeting Recap

The meeting was held on July 14, 2009.
The following is a recap of the KANDO meeting that was held on Tuesday July 13, 2009 at the Alcan Building. Ten people attended the meeting which began at 6:07pm.

Mike Link, the President of KANDO, began the meeting with welcoming everyone and having them introduce themselves. Prior to moving forward on the Agenda, Mike spoke about the Neighborhood Clean up that was held in June. Because this was our rain date we didn’t have as big of a turn out, however the clean up was still a success.

Following the Agenda was Impact Statements and attached was information regarding an individual that has been arrested in the neighborhood – numerous times – for selling drugs. There was a short discussion regarding this person and the negative impact someone selling/using drugs has on a neighborhood and that it negates the efforts of KANDO.

The next item on the Agenda was a proposed Assembly Bill 340 regarding restrictions on using CCAP, a tool that landlords use frequently when checking on a new tenant or their present tenants.

The next item on the Agenda was the Lighthouse and scheduling bringing in a dinner for the kids. The following was discussed and/or decided on:

•Liz will check with the Lighthouse if they are available for Friday September 11th and we will again extend the invitation to the 64th Street Block Watch.

•Having the dinner on this date will give KANDO two meetings before the event.

•It was agreed to grill hamburgers/hot dogs and also supply the following:
1.Fresh fruit
2.Fresh vegetables
3.Drinks
4.Deserts
5.Chips

The last item on the Agenda was Neighborhood Issues and the following was discussed:

•The Bike Patrol Officer has been seen and Mike mentioned that he took the time to introduce himself and point out some of the problem properties in the neighborhood. It was mentioned that if other people see an Officer on a bike or foot patrol to take the time to build those necessary relationships.

•Possible guest speakers were discussed and the group agreed they would like to have Captain O’Leary attend a meeting. It was also agreed that having a representative from Parking Enforcement join us again. Liz Hammer will make arrangements for both of these speakers for the upcoming meetings.

•Mike spoke of a positive experience with a local business, Advanced Electronic on 65th and Silver Spring.

•Liz spoke of Dino’s Steak and Lemonade and gave a good review of their food, which was followed up by other people giving their positive comments. It was agreed that Liz would make arrangements to order from there for the August KANDO meeting and everyone would pitch in.

•There was some discussion on another Landlord Breakfast that HEDC will be planning for September and the landlords agreed that the topic of How To Purchase Foreclosed Properties was a good selection.

•There was a short discussion on foreclosed properties and lenders and the challenges with both.

•There was a discussion on some of the nuisance properties in the neighborhood.

•There was a discussion on new businesses and/or old businesses in the neighborhood.

*There was short discussion on some of the positive feed back that we are either hearing or seeing regarding the neighborhood. Liz also let the group know that she has been hearing from neighborhoods in District Four that they are quieter and residents are feeling better about their community.

The agenda had a reminder of the July Crime Analysis meeting and an attachment about registration stickers for a vehicle.

The meeting ended at 7:20pm.
