KANDO (Kaul Avenue Neighborhood Development Organization)
Recap of October 2009 KANDO meeting.

The meeting was held on Tuesday October 13, 2009.
October 13, 2009

The following is a recap of the KANDO meeting held on Tuesday October 13, 2009 at the ALCAN building. The meeting was attended by 10 people.

Following the Agenda, Mike Link the President of KANDO began the meeting at 6:07pm with welcoming everyone and introductions were made. It was acknowledged that a new landlord was joining us.

Following the Agenda was a recap of the Lighthouse Youth dinner and it was reported to be a success. There were only about 20+ kids and less staff than usual; this seemed to be because of nice weather and school activities. It was also discussed about one person purchasing the food and bringing it, and it was agreed that this worked out well and we should follow that for the next time. KANDO will look at bringing the Lighthouse Youth dinner again in winter of 2010.

Next on the Agenda was recap of the Landlord Breakfast and it was reported that there were 30+ people that attended. A panel of various City Departments was also present. There were a number of new landlords that were at the Breakfast. The following was suggested:

Explain in advance, in more detail, the City Departments that will be at the breakfast and what they have to offer and that questions can be asked.

At the breakfast a suggestion was given to have the next speaker be someone from the Sheriff’s Department to talk about evictions. It was also suggested to have a Court Commissioner attend too.

Following the Agenda was Impact Statements and there was some discussion on the strong impact this has in the courts and the importance of a neighborhood doing them. The group was asked to prepare Impact Statements for a case that is coming up for sentencing, examples were given. Also attached were the most recent drug/gun arrests in District Four.

The final item on the Agenda was Neighborhood Issues and Concerns. The following items were reported and/or discussed:

The candy store on N. 63rd is being checked into by DNS.

The graffiti/tagging activity on N. 61st should be coming to a halt. The main player was arrested yesterday, along with three of his friends.

There was some discussion regarding a tenant whose kids are never in school. The group was reminded to call the non emergency number 933-4444 x 2 and report all suspected truancy. It was also mentioned that there is a special squad in the District that addresses truancy and these calls are monitored in the District and responded to immediately. It was suggested that this information get out to the landlords and Liz will put it out in the email loop.

There was some discussion on possible guest speakers for future KANDO meetings and the group was reminded that if there were any issues they were having and wanted a speaker to address those issues to let Liz know and it’ll be arranged.
