KANDO (Kaul Avenue Neighborhood Development Organization)
Recap of February's 2009 Meeting

The meeting was held at the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center.
Following the Agenda the President, Mike Link welcomed everyone and introductions were made.

Next on the Agenda under Old Business was an update on Westlawn. Liz Hammer spoke of the Westlawn Steering Committee and the progress that has been made on the redevelopment of Westlawn.

The next item on the Agenda was a report on the Lighthouse Youth Dinner that KANDO partnered with the 64th Street Block Watch on in November of last year. Everyone agreed that this was again a success and the evening was enjoyed by all that attended.

The last item under Old Business was a report on the leaf raking project. A short recap of what the project was and the partnership we had with the Lighthouse Youth Center. The response was very positive and there are plans for this again in 2009.

Mike Link brought up another idea he had which was to partner with the Lighthouse kids and help one of the long time residents and paint his garage, this had been proposed to the Lighthouse and they are interested.

Stephanie Harling, the Executor Director of Havenwoods Economic Development Corp. explained to the group that this would fall under the Healthy Neighborhoods initiative, and she explained the concept. She also explained that we have been designated as a Healthy Neighborhoods and let the group know that HEDC is looking for ideas on projects which will improve the neighborhood.

Following the Agenda under New Business was Paul’s Liquor and attached to the Agenda was the police report and letters from the City of Milwaukee. There was a short discussion on this business and it was confirmed that they are out of business.

The next item on the Agenda was future projects with the Lighthouse, which was addressed under Old Business.

The next item on the Agenda under New Business was the planning of the neighborhood clean up. The group picked Saturday April 25th from 10:00 – 12:00pm, and we will again work with the 64th Street Block Watch and the Lighthouse Youth Center. Liz Hammer will request the dumpsters to be placed in the same locations and it was noted that the turn out was high last year and more coupons will need to be ordered. The KANDO group will again supply hot dogs after the clean up. The planning will continue over the next couple months.

The remaining item on the Agenda was Neighborhood issues and the following items were brought up:

Officer Powell reminded residents that break ins are a concern and to keep their doors and windows locked and secured. Crime in the area has been down.

HEDC is working on building additional landlord compact groups in the area. They are putting together a working breakfast for landlords and there was a short discussion on what topics would bring in new landlords.

There was a short discussion on tenant issues.

There are a number of problem rental properties that have been sold and Liz Hammer is contacting those new landlords and introducing KANDO to them.
