Thanks for a Great Day!!

3-21-2004
Thanks for coming to the first in a series of four Habitat Steward Training Workshops! I hope you enjoyed your Saturday as much as we did. Garry, Nicole, Patrick, Saifon, and I have been talking and planning this for more than 6 months.

As a reminder, we will be meeting at the Mercado La Paloma next Saturday, 9:30 am, in the parking lot front of the shops. On the agenda:

1. online visit and orientation to the NWF Backyard Wildlife Habitat web page. We want you to be familiar with the resources there, the process of creating a profile, and filing a certification application online.
2. CTED Recon Survey of the Mercado La Paloma’s parking lot. The practicum will focus on creating a site map and doing the soil survey for one of the garden beds in the parking lot. The overall goal is to help Esperanza Community Housing Corp. (parent organization to the Mercado) file for a Backyard Wildlife Habitat certification of a business site.

Homework: To prepare for next Saturday, please read Section 5 (Homework) in the photocopied ESSI-NWF material you got at the first workshop. Please review the CTED paper and if you can, try to do some of the soil testing. We would like to see some of your results, so there is a photo-log page on Page 5.2. We encourage you to share you experience with the group by completing the page with a photo of your efforts.

Those who missed the first Meeting: Please contact me ASAP. It is still possible to get caught up. Please visit the NWF “Online University” at and sign up (it’s free). Choose lessons that help give you back ground on the habitat basics. Contact you team leader to get the Habitat Steward Handbook (3-ring binder) with the ESSI-NWF Meeting #1 materials. This is where you find the “homework” pages mentioned above.

Keep Updated: If you have access to the Internet, please visit the ESSI website . Be sure to check for updates by looking at the Newsletter, Calendar, and Discussion sections of the site. This are listed in the green sidebar on the left of the screen. It is a loooooong, sidebar, so remember to scroll down the page to see it all.

Soil pH Test: Watch for a new page on pH soil testing in the “Our Pages” section. I hope to have it posted very soon. This will be a “test” to see if the colors in the photo on the web page are good enough for this lesson. Next week, we will give you some strips of test paper to test the pH of your soil at home. For the on-site practicum, we will have the actual chart for you to use.

Meanwhile, if you have any questions, please post them to the Discussion Area on the ESSI website. This will enable us to share your question and answers with all the other trainees. You can post questions anonymously, so don’t be shy!

Thanks again for your time and interest to get trained as Habitat Stewards in an effort to make our world a better place for ourselves and other organisms on Earth.
