Think Globally, Act Locally

4-3-2006
The March 26th cover story of TIME magazine proclaims, ''The climate is crashing, and global warming is to blame.'' Gee, what a surprise! Us ''green'' antidevelopment and preservation types have been warning about this for twenty years or more.

And what did the developers say in return? They called us a bunch of namby-pamby Luddite extremists suffering from NIMBY syndrome. And they went about their business of pandering to our elected officials, so that they could plow under our forests and farmland, and pave them over with parking lots, shopping malls, and cheap tick-y-tacky houses.

So, what does this have to do with La Grange? Plenty. La Grange is the last large undeveloped farm north of the C&D canal. It is both an historic and an environmental treasure. And it deserves to be preserved on both accounts.

New Castle County should have played hardball with the greedy Barczewski children, back in 2004, so that they would have understood that the County's $9.6 million buyout offer was a fair price. But the County allowed itself to be outbid by a developer, who figured he could just hire some high-priced lawyers to go before County Land Use and downplay the property's historic and environmental significance. Thus allowing him to build houses, stores, schools, roads, and parking lots as he saw fit.

And now we have a the developer suing the FOHG activists for pointing out to County officials that the property had well-known qualities for which it deserved the full protection it was entitled to under existing law.

People, it is time to think globally and act locally! Don't let the developers destroy every last bit of open space in New Castle County. Stopping global warming means taking action at the local level. Stand up for historic and environmental preservation! Don't let the rules be ignored. Every acre you help save is one that helps save our environment.
