Please stay involved-Shipyard

3-30-2002
Recently, you may have read that MARAD, who now has control over the Fore River Shipyard has placed out for bid a proposal to perform shipbreaking of their own ships at the shipyard. Quincy has already gone on record in opposition, however, they also have a lot more to consider as they have a large bond for their loan to Mas Heavy Industries to pay off each year. We cannot wait and hope that they will be successful in protecting East Braintree interests. Shipbreaking involves noise; large amounts of hazardous materials generated, including lead and asbestos - all which have to leave the shipyard - through -of course- East Braintree - either by rail; Quincy Ave. or Hayward St. Remember the promises by MWRA? They promised to carry the dirt from the deep harbour tunnel out by barge - until it became too expensive, resulting in hundreds of trucks through Braintree. WE are having monthly meetings with Weymouth and Quincy - but you can be involved too. Write your State and specifically you federal legislators-Kerry, Kennedy, and Lynch - Don't let them forget us!
