Volunteer Opportunities in Brooklyn

Neighborhood Clean-up:

Twice a year Brooklyn has a Neighborhood clean-up. The neighborhood supplies the dumpster and the neighbors bring their solid waste or yard debris and have an opportunity to dispose of it for a nominal fee. Volunteers are needed to help the neighbors and organize getting the trash in the dumpster. You would be assigned a 2 hour shift during the hours of 9:00am to 3:30pm. The benefit is that you will meet a lot of neighbors and have the opportunity to dispose of one normal load at no cost. Watch the newsletter for the scheduled dates for the cleanup-up.

Newsletter distributor.

Brooklyn Neighborhood Newsletter is published six times a year. The newsletter is distributed to 2000 households by a group of dedicated individuals. The usual route takes about ½ hour to deliver. This would be the extent of obligation: ½ hours every other month. The benefits to the volunteers are that you get exercise out in the fresh air and have an opportunity to meet your neighbors. Neighborhood FootPatrol:

Brooklyn has had an active FootPatrol for over 10 years. The focus of the FootPatrol is to enhance the livability of our neighborhood. They are non-confrontational in their patrols and perform such duties as graffiti removal, keeping the telephone poles clean of advertisements, reporting abandoned vehicles and other safety issues. The benefits are that you get to walk through out the neighborhood and learn about the different aspects of your neighborhood. It is a social time for the patrol members as well as having an opportunity to interact with your neighbors. Your obligation would be about 1 ½ hours a week. With more volunteers this time would be lessened. . Contact brooknews@brooklyn-neighborhood.org for more info.
