When Fate Comes Knocking: The Events That Shaped the Life of Martin Luther King – through March 1st
…..Mixed Magic Theatre, 171 Main Street , Pawtucket , RI . Mixed Magic Theatre will present When Fate Comes Knocking, a new play that views the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King through the eyes of people who observed his life and the national and world events that would shape him. Writer/director Ricardo Pitts-Wiley describes When Fate Comes Knocking as a “pea shelling play”. The characters in the show, in a time honored southern tradition, gather on a porch in the early evening to shell peas, converse, sing and comment on the times. The cast includes Jim Webster, Ricardo Pitts-Wiley, Jeannie Carson, Yolanda Crockett and Danette Briggs. Martin Luther King is an iconic and heroic figure who led the American Civil Rights movement with courage, determination, and great oratory skill. He has also become a symbol around the world for people who are in a struggle for human rights and justice. “When Fate Comes Knocking” takes a humorous and sometimes critical look at King’s life against a backdrop of dramatic times in America including the Montgomery bus boycott, the Kennedy presidency, the March on Washington, Malcolm X, the Vietnam War, LBJ, Hoover and the Black Panthers. The play also examines the fateful circumstances that took King from the privileged life of a prominent southern preacher’s son to the dusty and dangerous back roads of Alabama , Mississippi , the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and the Nobel Peace Prize. A folk thought discussion will follow each performance. Tickets: $15 General Admission; $10 Students and seniors. For Information and Reservations, call 401-305-7333 .

AUREA – 2008-09 Subscription Series
…..We hope you have seen and enjoyed Till Human Voices Wake Us and A Child's Christmas in Wales , the first programs of our 2008–09 subscription series. It has been exciting to pair the poetry of T.S. Eliot with music by Ravel, Stravinsky, Milhaud, Wagner, and Chopin, and the Dylan Thomas tale with Vivaldi, Telemann, Bach, Grainger, Clarke and old English carols. We were delighted at the warm and enthusiastic response from our audiences, and look forward to the rest of our season — Inflections of Love in February, Under a Latin Moon in April, and Ecstasies Above, a June collaboration with the Providence Singers. Developing these integrations of music and poetry has been challenging, enervating, exhausting, and expensive. Ticket revenues pay only a portion of the costs of producing these programs, and we are reluctant to raise our ticket prices because it would exclude some of our audience, including students. I'm writing in the hope that if you are not already a Friend of Aurea, you will become one by making a tax-deductible gift to support these and future programs, and that if you are a Friend; you will renew your support. Gifts at all levels — Loyal Friends ($50), Valuable Friends ($100), Sustaining Friends ($250), Patrons ($500), and Angels ($1,000) — are welcome. Friends of Aurea enjoy after-concert events, listings in the programs, and huge appreciation from the musicians, actors, and board of Aurea. Please take a moment to send your check to Aurea, 195 Sessions Street, Providence , RI 02906 , or contribute online with PayPal. We are grateful for your support, and look forward to seeing you at future programs. With warm thanks, Consuelo Sherba, Artistic Director, aureaensemble@gmail.com

Fire & Ice Studio - 545 Pawtucket Avenue
..... Suite 113 - offers private and group work - shops at the studio to create a permanent work of art. We offer a number of ongoing workshops at our studio as well as our fabulous “Family Hands” workshop. When you participate in one of our workshops you get to design what you would like to make and do the set up for the etched design. We take individuals as well as school groups and other special group workshops. Bottle Workshops: Go green with us and reuse recycled wine bottles! We have several different workshops for bottles, pick the one that works for you or come to all of them one at a time. These are two-day workshops. Drinkware: In this workshop you get four bottles to make a set of mugs, 8 or 16oz glasses, and see how the process works while I cut to your measurement with the circular saw, then belt sand the edge smooth. You can then pick out a design (or bring your own to use) and learn how to mask off and cut the image out to be ready to sandblast. I do the sand blasting and you get to pick up your finished set of drink ware when they are done.
Vase Workshop: This workshop provides you with four wine bottles for you to design as vases. You can do a straight cut or an angle. Using the different shapes of the bottles as well as different cutting angles makes for a great assortment of vase shapes that we’ll cut and belt sand after you decide what you want. You can leave these plain or set up a design for etching into the vase as described above. Hurricane Lamp: The process is as described above; however this workshop entails cutting hock bottles to create the hurricane portion and the smaller burgundy bottle bottoms as the candleholder that fits underneath. Each participant may make two hurricane lamps, using four bottles. Can be etched with design as described above. Windchimes: This workshop will combine a number of glass and other parts and pieces. We will combine bottle tops, round slices of a bottle, flat glass or more bottle bits that can be cut and drilled into attractive shapes and hung as wind chimes. It’s a creative process! Lightcatcher Workshop: In this one-day workshop in late summer through the winter Holidays, you can make light-catchers/ornaments for Holiday gifts and decoration. You will get to make two light-catchers. This is our most reasonably priced workshop.
SCHOOL AND SPECIAL GROUP WORKSHOPS: We can do a glass tabletop divided into the number of children involved in the project so that each child gets to design a square with their own design. A theme may be picked that all do their art around. Then you get the tabletop to auction off to the parents to raise funds for your school or group’s art department! This workshop can be done in the school environment as long as you can store the glass safely, then I blast it at my studio and use one of my display bases for the auction. It’s a win-win- win! * -Grade 4 and up only- Children must be supervised by accompanying adults. www.fireiceglass.com for schedules and pricing, or for more info, Please contact Deborah at Fire & Ice Studio for more info about rates, reservations and pricing. #383-8691; deborah@fireiceglass.com or fireiceglass.com.
