Summerlin Av Re-opens After Capital Improvements

Summerlin Re-opens

After several weeks of repairs to the sanitary sewer lines under Summerlin Av between Amelia and Harwood Sts, the roadway has re-opened with the restored historic brick street bed.

Commissioner Sheehan was instrumental in working with Streets and Drainage to take advantage of the opportunity to restore this historic resource that also provides traffic calming attributes. In the early 1900s Lake Eola Heights was the first residential area out from downtown to have "paved" streets. During the Urban Renewal period of the mid to late 60s the neighborhood streets were asphalted over to move traffic quickly from downtown through the "derelict area" and out to the new suburbs. As the area became rehabilitated during the 80s, residents and city leaders worked together on a street program to mitigate speeding traffic while restoring the historic brick street grid. There are only a few remaining blocks that have the historic brick streets asphalt covered.
