Sites Recommended for Barn Owl Box Information

SITES RECOMMENDED BY THE BARN OWL BOX "HOSTS"

Compiled by Hester Gillespie 12/05
(in no particular order)

www.naturesfriend.com/mounting.htm
suggestions on mounting heights and locations for a variety of birds, inc. barn owls.

www.barnowlvideo.com/index.html
comprehensive site. includes ideas on how to attract barn owls as well as hanging a box.

www.owlpages.com/owls.php?genus=tyto&species=alba
listen to various calls of barn owls. good physical description and other general facts. (nothing on boxes though.)

www.rain.org/~sals/barnowl.html
pictures of innovative barn owl boxes! some hints on mounting.

www.bioweb.uncc.edu/bierregaard/Barn%20Owls.htm
dept of biology UNC Charlotte site has directions for building a box as well as mounting on a pole or building. (big on the use of preservative to finish the box, which we have decided is unnecessary in our climate.)

www.hungryowl.org/history.html
encyclopedia of information on barn owls. click on "owl boxes" (left of page), then "how to install a barn owl box" in body of article to pull up an excellent description of how to install b-o-boxes called "Barn Owl Box Installation Instructions and Quality Control". Hungry Owl Project is a program of WildCare and is located in Marin County.

Google Search Results

SITES I GATHERED FROM A GOOGLE SEARCH USING THE WORDS "MOUNTING BARN OWL BOXES" Many pages of sites came up. These were on the first few and seemed the best to me (but again, in no particular order)

www.americanartifacts.com/smma/per/nestcam/bobcam.htm
boxes for sale and descriptions for mounting inside an attic or barn.

www.bugspray.com/catalog/products/page1139.html
boxes for sale and some tips on mounting.

www.bsc-eoc.org/regional/barnowlbox.html
Ontario, Canada Barn Owl Recovery Project site. has building plan available, recommended placement and site characteristics: something most other sites don't mention.

www.carolinaraptorcenter.org/owl_box.php
very good site for directions on how to mount on poles or trees. the best I came across for this info.

www.home.earthlink.net/~wildwingco/id8.html
FAQ: good general info; some about mounting and site location.

www.members.tripod.com/Tommy51/barnowls.html
sell boxes of various designs. site has good pictures of different mounting options.

MAIN POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN MOUNTING A BARN OWL BOX:
1. Mount the box *securely*

2. Mount the box *out of the reach of prey*

3. Mount the box so that it is *protected from the elements * (ie, in the shade, out of wind, etc....)
