2000 NEW BOARD LAUNCHED
The Department of Recreation and Parks created the Park Advisory Board structure several years ago to invite active participation from the community to improve recreation programs and leisure services in their neighborhoods. PAB members are asked to offer guidance and counsel on how programs, operations and facilities best meet the needs of the community. The current Silver Lake Park Advisory Board was appointed in October 2000 By then-Recreation Director Santiago Cuevas.

In July 2001, we welcomed our new Recreation Director, Celia Mann. Celia has expressed her desire to work with the community in designing more cultural programs at the Center, as well as to continue to support the growing Silver Lake Seniors Club, after school and Day Camp programs.

Various PAB members are working to monitor several local projects including the Glendale Freeway expansion project, the capital improvements at Ferraro Fields and the Silver Lake Reservoir Master Plan, as well as working to find other facilities and schools and resources to increase leisure and recreational facilities for the community.

YOUTH SPORTS
Our new Director has a very strong sports background and her staff is committed to continuing the tremendous Youth Sports Program which currently serves over 400 children. Scores of active volunteer coaches have created a vibrant year-round program for league play in soccer, baseball, basketball and football, which helps promote a “life style of recreation” for our community. Silver Lake PAB also is active in the promotion of good sportsmanship. Celia has already created a new Sports Board, consisting of coaches, parents and community members, to be used in serving our sportsmanship goals and to solve problems or issues that arise from time to time.

BUILDING COMMUNITY
Among the early goals set in 2000 was to expand the use of Silver Lake Recreation Center into an active hub for our whole local community. In May, we hosted a ''Family Picnic'' which provided food and games for the children, as well as inviting local community organizations, schools, police programs and the new forming neighborhood councils to meet the families of Silver Lake. In July, the Park co-Hosted a ''Neighborhood Council Workshop'' which helped to recruit over 50 volunteers to sign-up for working committees now forming the new Silver Lake Neighborhood Council.

In August of this year, the Center helped support the local C-PAB in co-hosting our first annual “National Night Out”, which drew together activists from local neighborhood watch programs to have walk along the reservoir for a candlelight vigil in honor of victims of crimes in our neighborhood, culminating in a social gathering at the Recreation Center.

We plan to continue to produce community events that bring neighbors together and facilitate communication and a supportive environment for the residents of Silver Lake.

Our PAB is taking an active role in addressing the shortage of recreation space and facilities in our area. One venue for creating long-range plans with our residents was created at our Family Picnic in May, when we helped to launch a new series of quarterly meetings between the various Park Advisory Boards in the Griffith-Metro Region. The Recreation Supervisor for Griffith-Metro has already hosted the first meeting and we will have our second area-wide PAB meeting in September 2001. Our goals are to formulate plans for working together, sharing and utilizing the expertise and facilities of our local neighboring parks and the Advisory Boards in joint projects.
