The SCW Foundation's Goals
The SCW Foundation, Inc. was founded as a Delaware corporation in 1981. Its purpose is to assist, support, promote and encourage interest and improvement in the art and sport of ice skating in all its varied forms, and to promote the training of suitable candidates in local, regional, national and international competition.
The SCW Foundation, Inc. is a Delaware Corporation and has been classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a 509 (a) (1) organization under section 501 (c) (3) of the code. For this reason, donations to it may be properly classified as tax-deductible. A copy of the letter from the I.R.S. confirming our classification and our tax I.D. number are available upon request.
The General & Restricted Funds
The Foundation is operated by a Board of Directors who are familiar with the sport of ice skating and direct the use of the funds obtained. Donations may be made in various ways to the Foundation. Those given to our ''General Fund'' are used by the Foundation for any of the purposes stated. Most of the General Funds come from the members, USFSA-sanctioned competitive skating events, used equipment sales, and other fund-raising activities at The Skating Club of Wilmington.
Gifts to our ''Restricted Fund'' are earmarked specifically for the training and competitive expenses of suitable candidates active in the competitive fields of skating. Although recipients of support funds are selected by the Board based upon written applications and other information sources, the advice and wishes of specific donors are also considered to the extent that they are consistent with the purposes of the Foundation. Setting up a ''Restricted Fund'' Account is usually as easy as as a two-step process. Donation checks are sent to The SCW Foundation, 1301 Carruthers Lane, Wilmington, DE 19803 and the only requirement for the first check is to attach a letter requesting that a restricted fund be set up for the ice skating expenses of the named skater. Unless there is a question from the Foundation's Board about the account's donor and/or skater, future checks (payable to ''The SCW Foundation'') may be mailed with only a notation on the check referring to the named skater's account.
Training expenses include ice time fees, coach fees, chorographer fees, equipment, costumes, and travel expenses to competitions. A typical family pays $20,000 - $40,000/year to fund one serious competitor.
Donations Are Encouraged
We are very proud of the contribution our Foundation has been able to make to the sport and to its serious competitors. If you would like to join us in this endeavor, we would be most pleased to receive your tax-deductible donation. Just make your check payable to ''The SCW Foundation, Inc.'' Any amount is welcome.
