Land Preservation
Green Spaces' primary function is to preserve land. We work with landowners to place properties under conservation easements. Under a conservation easement, the property is returned to its natural state with native plants and animals, maintained as a natural-scape, and protected from any future development. Green Spaces works to preserve both large and small parcels of land in Bexar County and the surrounding counties.

Community Gardens Program
In concert with Green Spaces' primary function is our new effort to establish more green space within the urban environment for public enjoyment. Community Gardens are a means for individuals to participate in the preservation of green space, come together with neighbors, cultivate healthy eating habits, educate others about the environment, give children places to safely play and learn, spend time outdoors, clean-up the neighborhood, get more physical activity and beautify the urban landscape.

Begun in the summer of 2006, the community gardens initiative identified four pilot projects in the city where neighborhood groups wished to start community gardens. By the summer of 2007, numerous groups had contacted Green Spaces seeking support for other garden projects spread throughout San Antonio. Green Spaces got involved in the community garden movement is to act as a clearinghouse of financial support, physical resources and shared knowledge that would be the catalysts for publicly-sustained green space.

Environmental Education
In an effort to stimulate public environmental stewardship, Green Spaces offers numerous education programs each year. We host lectures and seminars for professionals and the general public.

The Picture Your World Youth Photo Project is a 5-year-old program that opens young people's eyes to the natural environment under the guidance of professional photographers and artists.
