Our Background and Mission
Individuals with disabilities too often live in poverty, are socially isolated, and have few meaningful choices in their lives. The greatest fear of their parents and friends is ''What will happen to my loved one after I am gone?'' Many times after individuals with disabilities' families are gone, the only people left in their lives are paid professional helpers. Are people with disabilities to be consigned to a future where most live with little self determination? There is another possible future.

Families & Allies Working Together works with people with disabilities to realize their dreams, abilities and skills, and builds relationships within the larger community, making metro Denver more vibrant and inclusive.

Families & Allies builds power by supporting the development of financial security, reciprocal relationships and meaningful lives. Equally important, the broader community benefits from the gifts and talents of individuals who are often excluded.

Our vision is that through our work, people with disabilities will be empowered to live full lives of their choosing and will achieve safe and secure futures.

Founded in 1999, Families and Allies is a community organization that includes people with developmental or other disabilities, their families, their friends, and all who have a desire to build community relationships.

Everyone has an asset
Families and Allies believe that all people have an asset, an interest, or a skill. We rely on these to connect people with others, based on mutual interests -- not needs. We offer:

1. Community connections for social activities, jobs, housing, home ownership, and more
2. Future planning
3. Personal Networks (or Circles of Support)
4. Educational presentations to congregations, nonprofits, and other associations on becoming more welcoming places and making connections with individuals with disabilities.

We also offer a handbook on becoming a welcoming organization, a newsletter, and workshops/training on issues of interest. Our general activities focus on the metro-Denver area.

We are available to make presentations with groups (congregations, associations, nonprofits, etc.) on building connections outside the service system. We would also love to show you the video Dream Catchers which illustrates Circles of Support and building upon people's dreams.
