What is GIS?

GIS = Geographic Information Systems
GIS is today's leading information processing technology. It can be used to make and analyze maps. The maps may look the same as a regular paper map. But the power of computing technology makes the map come alive. You can actually use the computer to get to the data used to make the map. And this lead to analyzing relationships between the various features and items shown on the map. This is similar to having a page of the phone book showing the phone numbers. If you also had computer data about all the companies whose phone number showed up on the page, you could then begin to group the companies by the products they sold, total annual sales, or by any other criteria so long as the data were in the computer.

What Can I Do with GIS?
Earth Systems Science wants to develop and implement community-based education programs to expose youth and their families to GIS technology in their neighborhood. This exposure can lead to increased awareness and knowledge of job related knowledge and skills. You could get a better job because you know GIS technology.

To learn more about GIS, visit the web page of ESRI, the leading GIS technology company.

Community Atlas Project and the My Community, Our Earth Project
You and your family can learn about GIS technology to make a community atlas. This gives you practical GIS knowledge and skills. Visit the ESRI Community Atlas web page to learn more about this neighborhood project.

Once your community atlas is done, you can get connected to other people around the world. Another project, "My Community, Our Earth" lets you share your community atlas with other members of other communities from around the world. To learn more about this opportunity, visit the MyCOE web page listed below.
