HOTEL 2B BUILT ON Ft DM II SITE
The DM City Council will vote Monday, July 27, 2009 to vacate an alley to allow for a hotel to be built on part of the site of Fort DM II which stood from 1843-1846. Due to the DMHS meeting that evening I cannot attend, but I have contacted the Mayor and Council about not vacating the alley until there is a plan in place to perform an archeological 'dig' before the hotel is built. The Morrison Electric car - the first electric car in the US was made in Des Moines. It was shown at the 1892 Worlds Fair in Chicago.
This was the first capitol building in Des Moines. It was built in 1857 and used about 26 years. It burned down about 1892 after being abandoned and neglected for several years.
UNFORTUNATELY, THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE IMPORTANT DECISION TO MAKE DES MOINES THE CAPITAL CITY OF IOWA WAS NEVER CELEBRATED!
