Tree Give Away
A joint neighborhood Arbor Day event in the Highlands will give away free trees to Metro Louisville residents. Four Highlands neighborhood associations, plus individuals and community businesses are partnering with the United Nations Environment Program's campaign ''Plant for the Planet!'' initiative. This is a global effort to provide tree canopy and reverse deforestation of the planet.

The 12 to 24-inch, bare-root seedlings to be given away include both canopy and understory trees.

Understory species are the:
  • Flowering Dogwood,
  • Eastern Redbud, and
  • Pawpaw,
which grow to some 30 feet.

Canopy species mature into 70 to 120-foot trees. The choices include:
  • Oaks (White, Cherrybark, and Bur),
  • Kentucky Coffeetree,
  • Yellow/Tulip Poplar, and
  • White Pine.
(see detailed tree info below to help you choose)

The list above is preliminary. A supplemental order for eight or more additional canopy species will be placed in February/early March, 2010.

Douglass Community Center at 2305 Douglass Boulevard, 40205, four blocks east of Bardstown Road, is the site of the joint Highlands tree give-away from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (or later), rain or shine. Additional parking is adjacent to the Division 5 Police Sub Station and along Douglass Boulevard. The event offers wrapped trees, light refreshments and plenty of information from the Master Gardeners with the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension, UK College of Agriculture, as well as expert advice from the forest ranger, arborists, tree huggers, and area naturalists associated with the Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

Stephen Spanyer – local organizer of Plant for the Planet! since 2007 through the Belknap Neighborhood Association – is spearheading the 2010 Arbor Day event for the expanded joint Highlands effort. This year Spanyer has found greater support for the United Nations ''Plant for the Plant!'' Billion Tree Campaign in the Highlands among neighborhood associations, individual donors, and the Metro Council. Since the UNEP has increased its goal to 10 billion trees to be planted worldwide in 4 years, the local tree give-away has grown from 300 seedlings in 2007 to more than 1,500 seedlings on order for 2010. This translates into a large variety of trees and more community involvement. Also, following the losses from the 2009 ice storm and hurricane Ike windstorm, the “Plant for the Planet!” tree give-away continues to aid canopy recovery. About 800 trees have benefited the Highlands zip code 40205 over the last three years, with the balance planted throughout the city and nearby counties.

Previous participants included many neighbors and friends, the Boy Scouts, extension service Master Gardeners, Highlands’ neighborhood association board members, foresters with the Kentucky Division of Forestry, Bellarmine Biology Club, the city arborist and local businesses. Additional support this year comes from the Bonnycastle Homestead Association and council members Tom Owen and Tina Ward-Pugh.
