Spokane Valley's unelected City Manager has shown a decided interest in having control of the police. Recently he has directed the City Council over the last few months to hire a consultant to evaluate the City's police and contract with the County under Sheriff Knezovich. Sheriff Knezovich has a reputation for fairness and honesty and Spokane Valley 'Chief of Police Rick VanLeuven has an excellent background and is doing a great job for our community.
The current frame work of our police is contracted with the County. The County Sheriff is elected and that gives us one more level of scrutiny and purview over affairs in our City, as well as resources that we could not afford on our own. Both jurisdictions overlap and so it makes sense to continue the contract since it is very cost effective and has reduced Spokane Valley crime by 19%.
An unelected City Manager does not seem to meet constitutionality to ensure that we can vote for those over our police force.
This is very concerning.
