Portland Preservation Alliance
Who we are and our plans
We are a group of current and former residents who want to see the history of Portland remain for future generations. We work for Portland by:1. Participating in activities that promote the heritage of the neighborhood.
2. Exploring ways to stabilize structures until purchasers can be found to restore or rehabilitate them.
3. Awarding individuals for their work in preserving Portland.
4. Create a handbook that will teach people how to find out how old their homes are. With documentation, we will offer the opportunity to purchase a plaque that will have the Portland Preservation Alliance (P.P.A) logo and will tell all that this home is historic.
5. Once the Portland Neighborhood Plan is approved and implemented we will be following the guidelines listed for preservation.
Current activities
The group is finding stories that will be used as part of the Interpretive Plan.We are currently working with the Portland Museum on their Heritage Trail and Portland Wharf Park Interpretive Plan, funded by a Preserve America grant. Metro Parks is a partner in this endeavor.
What will be the end result?
With this plan, a design will be created, and used to tell the residents as well as visitors about the history of Portland.Metro Parks will then implement the plan.
The Portland Wharf Park will have information available on site, and three Heritage Trails will come from there and be found throughout the neighborhood.
History will be "alive" on the streets of Portland.
The Portland Wharf Park has been a work in progress since the late 1980's, when an archaeologist found some of the original wharf located next to the Ohio River.
Archaeological explorations have been ongoing and the original town of Portland is located under about three foot of dirt, but it is still there.
We are looking forward to gathering information that will tell the history of Portland.
