We meet for a fun run and to train for the upcoming Wrigley River Run every Tuesday and Thursday at 615p to stretch, followed by a run at 630/640p
at 34th and Deforest

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER

Running Shoes & Gear. Do not test out new running gear on the day of our run, especially running shoes. If you are going to purchase a new pair of running shoes and/or running gear now is the time. Do not wait until the last week or so. This is experience talking.

Energy Supplements. Now is the time to research the various energy supplements. Find a product that agrees with your body chemistry makeup. Experiment in moderate doses. Do not test out energy supplements on the day of our run. This is experience talking.

Diet. A few days before our run day your diet should be light. Soups, salads, fruits, some pasta and lots & lots of water. Do not eat pizza and drink beer. This is experience talking.



We have some very experienced long distance runners in our group. Please, ask questions even if they might seem dumb. Remember there is no such thing as a dumb question.

For the runners who have not been able to make our training runs, and if you would like to get back on track, it is not too late! Yes, you can jump back on the train! Let us know and we will create a way to support your running intentions.

If you have discovered running is not for you at this time than that is OK. Guess what? You can support us and yourselves. We need volunteers to assist us in the WRIGLEY RIVER RUN 5/10k. Yes you can still participate! How great is that! Please call Vernon or Gavin and let us know at what level you can give us a hand. Remember this is more than a fun run in our neighborhood. This is an opportunity to enrich the lives of our “Youth at Risk” and provide these young people some life experiences that may not have been available to them.

There are some runners who may be thinking of taking their running experience to the next level. If this is a consideration than a recommendation is to check out what is available to support your running goals. There are many running groups available to us and we are fortunate enough to have two available here in Long Beach . The good news is both have ties to the WRIGLEY RIVER RUN 5/10k. Both running groups have produced extraordinary results and we invite you to check them out. Both running groups will be training for “The Long Beach Marathon & Half Marathon” in October of 2008. Is this to good to be true? Follow their links, do the research and ask the questions. We will see you at the finish line, or even better yet you will see us!

The Long Beach Neighborhood Foundation is a 501(c)3 (Federal Tax ID # 06-1827164) not for profit organization committed to organizing and sponsoring athletic events and programs in Long Beach . These events will promote community involvement, education, tolerance, and a healthy non-violent lifestyle. All funds generated will be used to benefit at risk youth through grants to local programs and through economic development efforts in historically underserved parts of Long Beach .

Update

The following is an update about the Wrigley River Run 5/10k and the River Runners Training Group from the Long Beach Neighborhood Foundation. If you prefer to not get occasional updates about running from the LBNF then please reply with the subject line “remove” and we will take you off our list.

Congratulations Wrigley River Runners Training Group!

We have successfully completed our first four weeks of training! YES!!!!!

The really good news is the runners who are training for the 5K run are waaaay ahead of schedule. For the runners who may have missed a training day or two or even three. It is not too late! Whether you know it or not you are on schedule! This is sooooo doable. “As a matter of fact it is a done deal”. All you have to do is show up!

For the 10K runners, as Emeril Lagasse would say.

“It’s Time to Kick it up a Notch”.

There will be an updated training schedule on 4/15/08.

Steve Mackel, head coach for “The Beach Runners” has agreed to join us at (4/08/08) Tuesday’s training session. “The Beach Runners” is the “Official Training Program” for the “Long Beach International Marathon”. If we play are cards right he will post our event on his (plural) web sites and encourage other runners to participate in WRIGLEY RIVER RUN 5/10k. Here is what our training session will look like. Steve will lead us in some Chi Running techniques. The purpose is to run efficient, using less energy with fewer injuries. We will do our scheduled run and then Steve will lead us in a Yoga session.

So that you know Steve Mackel is a Certified ChiRunning/ChiWalking® Instructor, a Certified Hypnotherapist, a Certified Personal Trainer, a USA Triathlon Coach, a USA Cycling Coach, a Certified Massage Therapist, Lululemon Ambassador and a Yoga Teacher. Steve’s training philosophy has been greatly influenced by the axioms of yoga and the body-mind-spirit connection.

For those of you that may have thought about dropping out of the River Runners Training Group or may have been a bit relaxed in your training, now is the time to get back on board! The support group is on your side and the timing is perfect. It is not too late! So put on your running shoes and, lets have some fun! Bring your friends, your neighbors, your children, your spouses, your parents, and lets put a few miles under our feet!

We will provide WRIGLEY RIVER RUN 5/10k flyers to pass on to our friends and neighbors. We will receive some excellent coaching and we will have fun!
