YOUR COMMUNITY'S ENVIRONMENT
What Environmental Hazards Are In Your Neighborhood?
Do you know the environmental quality of your neighborhood?
Use the hotlink below and search for your community by zip code. Look at the legend to find out what hazardous sites have been identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
What Can You Do About It?
Remember that not all environmental hazards are created equal. Further, some hazards can be isolated in place, but are much more hazardous if disturbed and enter the air, water, and soil---which means they can then enter you!
Learn about local weather patterns (e.g. wind directions), flood conditions, and how your home or work place is affected by these natural phenomenon.
Should you notice problems, report them to relevant city, county, state, and federal authorities. DON'T RELY ON ONE CALL OR COMPLAINT TO ONLY ONE OFFICE. Your complaint can get lost in the shuffle. Multiple contacts especially to different levels of government may be more helpful. Legal jurisdiction (authority) over the complaint issue may be segmented by the bureaucracy. If you call the wrong office, NOTHING may happen---and you can't rely on them to contact the proper authority.
Act Together
Get together with your neighbors and contact your city Councilman. After all, they are supposed to serve you. But in all fairness, they cannot serve you if you don't let them know what you are thinking and feeling, right?
