GREY CLOUD ISLAND CEMETERY
BURIALS
Grey Cloud Island Cemetery is located in Grey Cloud Island Township on the Mississippi River in south west Washington Co., Minnesota.
The earliest known burial was a McCoy Baby who died 09 February, 1873. At that time many of the residents were of "mixed-blood" Indian families who owned small farms on the Island.

** There are two gravestones located in the cemetery that were brought from an old farmstead in Afton. One for Alexandria Leith and one for Mary L. Leith. These females are not buried in Grey Cloud Cemetery. The stones were found and brought to Grey Cloud because there are other Leith's buried here.

FACTS AND FICTION ABOUT GREY CLOUD CEMETERY
To qualify for burial in Grey Cloud Cemetery you must be a resident of Grey Cloud Island Township or the spouse of a person already buried there. For further information about burial please contact the Township Clerk, Richard Mullen at 651 459-6236.On Sunday, September 30, 2001 a plaque from the Washington County Historical Society was installed in the cemetery and dedicated, which reads; GREY CLOUD CEMETERY - The first burials, from 1873, were from early French Canadian families who first settled the island--Bourcier, Brunell, LaBathe, Leith, Mavis, McCoy and Turpin. The John Stringer family donated the first land for the cemetery in 1894.
There are many ghost stories and tales about Grey Cloud Cemetery being haunted by an Indian Chief named Grey Cloud who carries a green lantern. These stories are NOT true. Those of us who have lived on Grey Cloud for many years have never seen any para-normal activity or ghosts in the cemetery. One very important fact is that Grey Cloud was not an Indian Chief at all. Grey Cloud was actually a Sioux woman, the daughter of Chief Wabasha who married A Scotsman named James Aird. Her name in the Sioux language is "Mar-pi-ya-ro-to-win." Her daughter Margaret was also given this name.
The cemetery is secluded and the gates are always kept locked because of past vandalism. The cemetery is about a block in from the road gate and You can walk in during daylight hours. Visits can also be arranged by contacting our Township Clerk, Richard Mullen at 651 459-6236.
No one is allowed in the cemetery after sunset and violaters are prosecuted.
