The DeKalb Historical Society

he DeKalb Historical Society is one of the largest historical societies in the state of Georgia. Formed in 1947 as a non-profit organization to collect, preserve, and display DeKalb County's history, the organization currently has over 1300 members.

The Society is housed in the old Courthouse on the Square, which provides space for the archives and museum, as well as rental facilities for meetings and special events. The museum features two permanent exhibits, "DeKalb: The First Hundred Years," and "Johnny Reb and Billy Yank: The Life of the Common Soldier." The archives includes a 1500-volume library, early maps, and photographs. Genealogy and research assistance are a part of the
archives program.

An Historic Complex on West Trinity Place includes three antebellum structures: the Benjamin Swanton House and two log cabins. The Society sponsors a variety of activities including historic tours, an oral history series, newsletter, meetings open to the public, and a speaker's bureau. In addition, the Society publishes four historically related publications.
