Keeping Our Neighborhood Safe
Tips to Avoid Becoming a Target
Jere Orvin, a CVHA Director and a CSPD member, is offering the following advice in light of the area being hit hard with crime. We are clearly an easy target because we have become too lax. In most cases the kind of crimes we are seeing can be easily avoidable if we as a community do not leave ourselves open to be victims.
Never, under any circumstances, leave anything of value in a vehicle.
Always lock your vehicle and remove the keys from the ignition. Winter is coming and some people like to have their car nice and warm when they leave the house. An unattended running vehicle is against the law and is how most vehicles are stolen in the winter.
Hide your garage door openers or take them into the house with you. Once they have the opener, they can steal your car from the garage and/or enter your house.
For some, it might be a good idea to clean out your garage and park the car(s) in the garage.
Lock your house - front, back and garage doors. Again, most of these crimes are committed where easy access can be gained. Leaving the garage door unlocked gives access to your cars and to your house if the door into the house is not locked.
The old system of taking your valuable items to a pawn shop and coming away with cash is too risky. A single check out of your checkbook is enough for a criminal to ruin your credit and rack up thousands in debt. This means not putting outgoing mail in your mailbox and taking in the mail as soon as possible and not leaving a checkbook in the car.
Outside lights should be on in full force. Lights deter criminal activity.
Clearing landscaping from the door area eliminates a hiding place or access without being seen.
Garage doors should be closed unless you are working in front of them. Carry your garage door opener with you when working around the outside of the house so that the doors can be kept closed.
We as a community may have a false sense of security that is catching up with us right now. If we take note of what is going on around us right now and take steps to prevent becoming victims, the crime will decrease and those committing the crimes will move to another area where it is easier to commit these break ins.
Extra Duty Police Hired
The off-duty patrols hired by CVHA have been doubled recently. Even with those extra hours of service, the police cannot be in front of your house 24/7. There is a large area to cover and the chances of the police being at your house as a crime is being committed are probably slim to none. It is up to each and everyone of us to do everything we can to make Rockrimmon unattractive to theft.
Pass this word to your friends who live in Rockrimmon but not in Comstock Village. This is a Rockrimmon problem and all residents in Rockrimmon need to heed this advice.
Thank you.
