What does an Area Commissioner Do?

To Summarize, an Area Commissioner is an elected volunteer who represents his/her neighborhood on a quasi-governmental entity that makes recommendations to the Columbus Zoning Authority about land-use, and to City Council about many issues. The Area Commission receives a $2,000 operating budget from the city each year and none of the commissioners are paid. Under the authority and advise of the Columbus Department of Development, the city’s 14 Area Commissions were established through guidelines established by City Ordinance 3109, which may be read on-line at the city’s web site at http://columbus.gov. The North Central Area Commission has 15 seats and is your connection to city government, with representatives from 10 district Civic Associations. Commissioners serve a 2-year term and may run for re-election when their term expires.
