Attached is the new Community University (CU) brochure for our winter/spring ‘09 workshops beginning in February. Please share with your neighbors and other contacts to help us get the word out about our program.
Highlights:
New workshops: Your Neighborhood Organization: Basics and Beyond, Technology Tools for Your Neighborhood, and How Are We Doing: Neighborhood Checkup
Additional workshops include Developing Our Future: Mobilizing Youth for Neighborhoods, 501(c)(3) Status and Neighborhoods: What it Means for You, and Gang Awareness
Locations include McCrorey YMCA, Methodist Home Recreation Center, West Boulevard Library, and Morrison Regional Library
Cost = FREE
And don’t forget, we’ll conclude our fall/winter schedule with Neighborhood Networking at the University City Regional Library from 6:30pm-8:30pm on Thursday, January 22, 2009. Join us as residents discuss and problem solve common issues facing neighborhoods today.

COMMUNITY UNIVERSITY
Community University is a neighborhood capacity building
program dedicated to providing high quality training to Charlotte
residents to improve the strength and vitality of neighborhood
organizations and the overall quality of community life. The
courses are intended to engage, inform, and equip participants
with the training and assistance needed to help them improve and
maintain their communities.
All Community University workshops are FREE and
open to Charlotte residents.
Residents are encouraged to participate in all four core classes
and the entire “Hot Topic” series, but may attend individual
workshops if preferred.
A minimum number of confirmed pre-registered
participants is required for each class to be held.
CORE CLASSES
The Community University program offers a four-part series of
core classes which cover fundamental topics helpful with
strengthening neighborhood organizations. The core classes for
the winter/spring 2009 schedule are:
YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATION: BASICS AND BEYOND
Discuss strategies to improve the functionality of neighborhood
organizations, including roles and expectations, the structure and
effectiveness of documents, and organizational stewardship.

DEVELOPING OUR FUTURE: MOBILIZING YOUTH FOR NEIGHBORHOODS
Explore best practices to recruit and sustain youth involvement in
community and neighborhood projects, meetings, and activities.

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS FOR YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
Review helpful sites, tools, and resources for neighborhood
organizations to stay technologically current while promoting their
organizational vision and goals.

FUN WITH NEIGHBORHOOD FUNDRAISING
Learn the basics of neighborhood fundraising, including types of
fundraising, solicitation approaches and resources, and fundraising
strategies.

HOT TOPIICS
The “Hot Topics” series addresses many key neighborhood issues
and concerns throughout Charlotte. Topics for the winter/spring
2009 series are:
ABCS OF ZONING AND DEVELOPMENT
Examine the City’s zoning and development process, including
types of petitions, zoning steps and procedures, and roles and
responsibilities of the City, developers, and the public.

HOW AREWE DOING: NEIGHBORHOOD CHECKUP
Review assessment and evaluation tools to help identify
organizational strengths and weaknesses, then create strategies
to overcome low performance areas.
March 10 (Tue)
501(C)(3) STATUS AND NEIGHBORHOODS: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
Gain a better understanding of the 501(c)(3) status, application
process, and relevance for neighborhood organizations.
This workshop is not designed to provide step-by-step
instructions on completing the application, but will provide an
overview on what the status means for neighborhood
organizations.

GANG AWARENESS
Learn about warning signs, prevention techniques, intervention
steps, available resources, and how neighborhoods can protect
themselves and their youth.
May 6 (Wed)
GOOD NEIGHBOR
Discuss basic good neighborly skills, key code and zoning
ordinances, diverse methods of conflict management, and other
helpful resources to keep a neighborhood healthy and stable.
