About Wakefield Civilian Patrol

JOIN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD CIVILIAN PATROL TODAY

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Wakefield Civilian Patrol is to patrol our neighborhood, and to make it one of the safest communities in the city. Members ride around designated areas and act as the "eyes and ears" of the Police Department.

HOW WE OPERATE

The Patrol operates out of a base station at 4354 Boyd Avenue, Bronx, New York 10466-1804 (Telephone number 718-324-7770) weekdays from 8-10 P.M. Patrols consist of members who drive their cars, paired with a rider/observer. Each pair is equipped with a radio and magnetic signs for the car. Patrollers ride around a designated area and report on any suspicious or dangerous conditions observed. They are in constant contact with the base operator who has phone access to the 47th Precinct. Patrollers are instructed to stay in their cars and report information, but not to get involved. The civilian patrol program is approved and regulated by the New York City Police Department.

OUR HISTORY

The Wakefield Civilian Patrol began operation in September 1976, after a group of spirited citizens got together to keep the neighborhood safe. Since then the members have taken great pride in their service to the community. In 1988 the Patrol merged with the Wakefield Taxpayers & Civic League, Inc. As a committee of the League the Patrol has access to more people and influence.

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The Patrol's record of crime resistance is quite remarkable. Our presence has stopped criminal acts in progress. We mobilized assistance on a regular basis for a variety of problems. We have alerted the Fire Department on numerous occasions and even extinguished small fires ourselves. Patrollers have saved lives by getting medical assistance to those involved in accidents or health emergencies.

Our patrollers have been there at the beginning and end of social functions to make sure that people get home safely. We have reported on poor road conditions, broken street lights and traffic signals, abandoned cars, and illegally parked cars and trucks. Our presence has been highly effective in stopping vandalism and malicious mischief.

In addition, the Patrol has provided crime resistance lectures to members, given by the Police and the FBI. We have also provided lectures on CPR techniques and safe driving.

JOIN US!

In order for a group to survive, new members must continuously come forward. We are looking for Wakefield residents who want to give back to their community. To those people who can give two hours a week to help us, we offer the satisfaction that comes from giving unselfishly of yourself to keep a good neighborhood alive. We welcome all, male and female, young adults and senior citizens. The Police Dept. requires you to be at least 18 years of age to patrol.

If you are interested in patrolling, please go to "To Join Wakefield Civilian Patrol", on the League's home page.
