Neighborhood Watch Program

What is Neighborhood Watch?

Neighborhood Watch is the joint effort by police and citizens to reduce and prevent crime in our community. It is not just practiced in "high crime" communities; it is used as a crime prevention tool as well. Burglary, car thefts and prostitution are crimes that have been reported as being problems in our community. These crimes can be prevented.

Citizens become extra eyes and ears for the police department and themselves. Therefore, crime prevention becomes a partnership on the part of local law enforcement and the neighbors in the community.

After the September 11, 2001 tragedy, we must be more alert as to who is in our community. Neighbors do not live in a vacuum--what affects your neighbor today will affect you today or tomorrow.

Neighborhood Watch teaches:
* how to recognize suspicious activity
* how to report suspicious activity
* how to effectively describe
suspicious persons and vehicles.

It is far less costly to use police time and taxpayer dollars to prevent crime than to spend money on solving a crime after its occurrence. Law Enforcement cannot do it alone.

Neighborhood Watch is free; it requires a small amount of volunteer time by neighbors in the community.

You can start a Neighborhood Watch on your street today! We need to recognize and know our neighbors.

Benefits of Neighborhood Watch will:
*Reduce the risk of being a crime victim
*Better Reporting of suspicious activity
*Neighborhood Watch Signs in community

Crime Spots

The following are streets that have been identified as having criminal activities:

*** Spring Garden Drive ***
2467 Spring Garden Drive - repeated problems with juveniles and young men and girls involved with robberies at homes and car thefts. A girl (young, black, skinny girl with black wavy hair) was going to neighbor's houses stating that she needed help or something to eat or to use the cell phone. She would then use this information to gain access into the home and find a way to open windows to come back and climb in later with other guys. One neighbor caught her doing this in her kitchen...be alert.

2378 Springdale Circle - repeated problems with young males involved in criminal activity with one making threats against an elderly neighbor. Police have been informed but neighbors need to be alert for young males painting graffiti on street and signs and trying to hang sneakers on utility lines over streets for drug activity.

A major problem with the prostitution is the prevalence of young girls being used for acts of prostitution. Other females and young boys have been found to be acting as "pimps" for these young girls. We can stop this happening in our community. It is urgent that we call ***911*** and report the addresses and locations to the police. If you remain silent, then you become part of the problem! Remember, Atlanta was named as Number 1 in Child Exploitation & Child Prostitution in a Wall Street Journal Article in 2006.

**** CODE ENFORCEMENT REPORT ****

**2195 Springdale Road - Burned House**
Owner has been brought to City of Atlanta Housing court for long-term violations. Judge Barbara Harris refused to accept "not guilty" pleas due to the severity of the offenses and the length of time the property was vacant and unboarded causing health hazards. Rats from this house ate a neighbors' puppies and grass was so overgrown causing snakes and rodent problems for neighbors. Grass has now been cut in back; house has still not been boarded properly. Keep Calling Code Enforcement at 404-330-6190 until everything is okay.

** 690 Banks Avenue **
Code Enforcement is trying to get someone to take responsibility for the house. It is under a trust which has changed names over the past five years.
Property has been sent over to City of Atlanta's IN REM for demolition due to house being boarded for over two years.
