Civic Leadership Academy Applications are now OPEN – Apply by August 21! 

 

The City of Charlotte’s Civic Leadership Academy is a free program specifically designed for residents like you – Charlotteans who are ready to take the next step in being community leaders and improving the quality of life in all of Charlotte’s neighborhoods. The experience will provide participants an opportunity to grow in their leadership, understand how the City of Charlotte works, analyze issues using data, connect with decision-makers, and make a difference in their communities. 

 

During the Civic Leadership Academy (CLA), you will:

 

  • Receive a personalized leadership assessment
  • Learn how to effectively use your leadership style to positively impact the community
  • Enhance your understanding of Charlotte history and culture
  • Develop relationships with other leaders in the community and local government
  • Learn how to navigate issues through local government
  • Commit to using your leadership skills in the broader community

 

Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your leadership skills and work with other leaders to create a community where every voice is heard. Watch as CLA alumnus Robin Brown shares her experience in the program.

 

The Fall 2022 CLA will be held as a hybrid series, with a mix of in-person and virtual sessions. Participants must commit to missing no more than three sessions. Review the workshop schedule and apply online.  

 

Applications must be received by August 21 at 11:59 p.m. CLA sessions will begin September 21.

Attend a Neighborhood Matching Grant Pre-Application Workshop to learn how your neighborhood can receive up to $25k!

 

The Neighborhood Matching Grants Program (NMG) awards up to $25,000 to eligible neighborhood-based organizations to complete projects including art, beautification, signage, festivals, sustainability, safety improvements, community gardens, recreational features and more! Applications are accepted March 1, June 1, and September 1, annually. Organizations match funds received with at least 50% volunteer labor, the remaining match may be in the form of more volunteer labor, cash, or in-kind donations (equipment, supplies, professional services, etc.).

 

Participation in a pre-application workshop is required. To get started, attend one of the following workshops or view the workshop presentation and program guidelines online. 

 

  • Thursday, August 18, 6 - 7 p.m.
  • Monday, August 22, 6 - 7 p.m.

Youth ages 16 - 24 apply for Job & Career Readiness Training today!

 

The City of Charlotte's Youth Programs provides 16 - 24-year old residents the opportunity to participate in career readiness training. Job & Career Readiness Training (JCRT) is a six-week, tuition-free, fully virtual program that covers job readiness, interview preparation and essential skills.

 

Benefits of JCRT:

 

  • Improve resume 
  • Enhance interview skills
  • Sharpen essential skills
  • Personality exploration 
  • Earn one college credit from Central Piedmont Community College
  • Access to the Mayor's Youth Employment Program 

 

Program registration is required. The deadline to apply is October 3. Virtual training will begin October 24 and end December 6. In addition to virtual training, youth will participate in a 4 hour live training via Zoom facilitated by city staff that will reinforce the information covered during virtual learning. Live sessions will be offered at various times to accommodate student schedules. JCRT is the first required step an interested student must take to pursue Mayor's Youth Employment Program (MYEP) eligibility.

Strategies for Increasing Involvement in Your Neighborhood Organization | August 30, 6 p.m.

Increasing neighborhood involvement is an important component of building a strong community. Join us for an interactive workshop to learn how you can help get your neighbors more involved in the community. 

 
We’ll discuss how to:

  • Boost meeting and event attendance
  • Recruit new members and volunteers
  • Improve neighborhood communication

 

This workshop will take place via Zoom. Registration is required. Online and call-in access instructions will be emailed to registered participants prior to the workshop.

 

Training on Demand: 2023 Property Revaluation: What Does It Mean for Me?

 

Housing & Neighborhood Services hosted a workshop in July 2022 in collaboration with Mecklenburg County to increase awareness of the 2023 property revaluation that will affect property taxes beginning January 1, 2023. In this session, you will learn from the County Assessor’s Office about the property revaluation process, possible impacts on property taxes, and how to appeal your 2023 assessed value if needed.

Helping Out Mecklenburg Homeowners with Economic Support (HOMES) - Apply by November 18

The Mecklenburg County HOMES Program is currently accepting applications for property tax assistance. The grant program is designed to assist qualified residential homeowners with low to moderate income within Mecklenburg County to retain their homes by reducing the financial burden resulting from the robust real estate market. Qualified applicants can receive up to $340 in property tax assistance.
