On October 13, North Carolina moved strongly into a reliable and affordable clean energy future. Gov. Cooper signed HB 951 which requires the Utilities Commission to take steps needed to get the state a 70% reduction in carbon emission by the year 2030 and to carbon neutrality by 2050.

Governor Cooper Encourages Eligible Families in North Carolina to Apply for Child tax Credit Payments

This month many families across North Carolina are receiving an installment of the advance Child Tax Credit federal payment, which provides them with up to half of their total credit and bolsters their income to meet immediate needs for children’s health and well-being. These dollars can immediately improve the food and financial security of families with children at a critical time as they work to recover from the pandemic.

N.C. HOPE Program Marks First Year With More Than A Half-Billion In Rent And Utility Awards

More than $461 million already raid to landlords and utilities statewide
|
The N.C. Housing Opportunities and Prevention of Evictions (HOPE) Program marked its Oct. 15 one-year anniversary with more than a half-billion dollars in pandemic relief funds awarded to North Carolina landlords and utility companies on behalf of vulnerable families. In total, HOPE has awarded $520.2 million to 135,213 families with more than $461 million of that amount already paid to landlords and utility providers across the state. The HOPE Program continues to rank #2 in the nation for number of households served, while North Carolina overall ranks #6 for spending of federal Emergency rental Assistance money. The HOPE Program supports housing stability during the pandemic by preventing evictions and utility service disconnections.

NCDOT Sets New Litter Collection Record of 11 Million Pounds

The N.C. Department of Transportation’s crews, contractors and volunteers have collected more than 11 million pounds of litter from roadsides, exceeding the state’s record for litter collection set in 2019.
“This is the kind of record we never wanted to break,” said Transportation Secretary Eric Boyette. “I am very proud of the hard working employees, contractors and volunteers who’ve helped us collect this trash, but litter shouldn’t be there in the first place. Keeping North Carolina beautiful starts with everyone doing their part.”
Since Jan. 1, NCDOT has collected more than 11 million pounds of litter, totaling more than $15.8 million on litter collection efforts.
In 2019, NCDOT forces and volunteers set the previous record by collecting 10.5 million pounds of litter statewide.
NCDOT’s litter management programs are multifaceted. The department makes use of state-owned forces and contract services statewide. NCDOT’s Sponsor-A-Highway Program allows businesses, organizations and individuals to sponsor litter removal along roadsides. NCDOT is also proud to partner with the more than 120,000 participants in the Adopt-A-Highway, where volunteers pledge to clean a section of our highways at least four times a year.
