Legislative Update

The General Assembly short session is beginning to wrap up. Now that the budget has been completed, consideration is being given to issues related to economic development, health and human services policies, transportation and more. The County is continuing to monitor legislation and work with delegation members to analyze any impact to the County.

As Congress deliberates on budget items at the federal level for the upcoming fiscal year, we recently issued a letter of comment to our congressional delegation sharing the importance of sustaining the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). More than 1786 families in Mecklenburg County are recipients of TANF benefits and would be affected by changes to the program.

Child Support Holds 2nd Chance Amnesty Week

This week, the Child Support Enforcement Department will host their fourth 2nd Chance Amnesty Event at the Child Support Enforcement Office, 5800 Executive Center Drive, Suite 200, Charlotte.

The event is an opportunity for noncustodial parents to come into the office and discuss their case(s) and get back on track with child support payments without fear of being arrested. Attendees should be prepared to pay at least one month of the child support obligation and one payment of $25.00 or more towards the past due amount. CSE has seen great success during past events, collecting over $30,000 in child support payments.

During this event, noncustodial fathers will have an opportunity to talk with male child support case managers, Judicial officials, court stakeholders, public health officials, Self-Serve Center officials, potential employers, community stakeholders and private attorneys about their rights and responsibilities once named in a child support case.

For more information, including dates and times, click here or contact Child Support Enforcement Director Joan Kennedy at 980-314-8750 or Joan.Kennedy@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

Criminal Justice Services Launches New Arrest Dashboard

Mecklenburg County’s Department of Criminal Justice Services has launched the first in a series of Criminal Justice Dashboards. These dashboards are an innovative and interactive approach to government transparency and provide users with a broad overview of activity in the local criminal justice system.

The Mecklenburg County Arrest Dashboard allows users to explore changes over time in the volume of arrests and disaggregate information by various characteristics, including race, gender and age.

In the coming months, Criminal Justice Services will publish additional dashboards which will allow users to easily view court and jail information. The goal of these Criminal Justice Dashboards is to promote increased transparency, innovation and collaboration within the local criminal justice system.

Dashboards will be available at this link https://www.mecknc.gov/CriminalJusticeServices/Dashboards/Pages/ArrestProcessing.aspx.

For more information, contact Criminal Justice Services Director Sonya Harper at 980-314-1701 or Sonya.Harper@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.
