Start a Neighborhood Watch on your block!

Mark Wells, a former Portland police officer and today a Crime Prevention Coordinator and Community Organizing Specialist for the Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement, attended a SMILE General Public Meeting to discuss “how to start a Neighborhood Watch or Foot Patrol”.

He commented that Portland is a safe city, but we do have a drug problem and a property crime problem. Neighbors who know and care about each other are a potent force against crime.

Wells went into detail on the process of starting a Neighborhood Watch, and how a Foot Patrol differs from that – and invited anyone interested in starting either one or the other to get in touch with him.
A Neighborhood Watch can be scaled to fit the needs of the people involved, and there are plenty of resources available.
