Neighborhood Watch

The Scotland County Sheriff’s Office takes the safety of its communities very serious, but as you know, we cannot be everywhere all the time.  This is why we depend on our community members to do their part to help keep their neighborhoods safe.

Neighborhood Watch is one of the oldest and best-known crime prevention concepts in North America. In the late 1960s, an increase in crime heightened the need for a crime prevention initiative focused on residential areas and involving local citizens.

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) responded, creating the National Neighborhood Watch Program in 1972 to assist citizens and law enforcement.

Traditionally, Neighborhood Watch Groups revolved around preventing crime. However, the role and function of Neighborhood Watch groups has expanded to include an “all hazards approach to neighborhood issues.

After 9/11 and Katrina, we were all reminded of how important it is for communities to work together to provide information and assistance to public safety agencies in their efforts to return our neighborhoods to a safe and healthy place to live and work.

Looking beyond the need to create a “crime” watch program, it is essential that communities be prepared to address any situation that disrupts the public order and creates an environment of fear and uncertainty.
