→ Programs are a great tool in making sure your plants are getting the nutrients they need throughout the year to stay healthy, combat stressors, and look beautiful

→ On a Program, Technicians are on your property multiple times a year checking your trees and shrubs for any insect or disease issues and keeping you informed

→ Programs are tailored to fit the needs of your trees and shrubs. Interested in preventative insect control treatments? That can be included in your Program! Your Arborist can help you decide which one is right for you

Pruning Types 101: Recipe For A Safe And Healthy Tree

Arborist Luther Marchant in Greenville, SC gives us some basic lessons on Pruning Types in this month's newsletter! Read more below!

"Many of my conversations with clients about trees revolve around the subject of pruning. Even though there are international pruning standards, it is rare to find a tree care company that knows the terminology, much less uses it!

The most common and basic pruning type is called Crown Cleaning. The main objective of Crown Cleaning is safety; therefore, as you might expect, this pruning type targets dead wood, decayed, and damaged branches for removal. This would also include removal of sprout growth, vines, and mistletoe as needed.

Crown Raising is the pruning type that focuses on removing lower branches to gain clearance over the yard or roof. It can also specify clearance of branches from an object like a house wall or security light.

As your tree ages and grows taller and wider, two other pruning types become very important. Crown Thinning and Crown Reduction are the pruning types that are used to manage limbs that have grown too long or too heavy toward the end of the branch. The main cause of branch failures are wind and ice -- these forces put pressure on branch ends and can exceed the limb’s weight bearing ability, causing failure. Crown Thinning and Crown Reduction call for the removal of a specified percentage of smaller branches, usually toward limb ends, which reduces branch or foliage density. Ice has less surface area to accumulate on, and wind meets less resistance so that the tree is much more able to withstand these destructive forces.

Most branch unions are strong and are designed to bear a great deal of weight. However, it’s fairly common to find branch unions that are weak, and regardless of pruning, may be susceptible to fail. Sometimes the best solution is to install a cable to help support the branch or other weak structure. When branch unions forma  sharp “V” shape, they are often weak. It’s best to have one of our Arborists check your trees for weak structures; they know exactly what to look out for!"

Call our office today to set an appointment or talk to your arborist about what you can do to help your trees and shrubs stay happy and healthy!
