Overland Park

Last Friday I came home from work and there were 3 homeless people in the alley behind my house drinking at about noon.  This Friday 9-25-09, I was leaving my house and there were about 12 to 15 of them walking down the alley on South Acoma from the 2600 to the 2500 block.  Some of them staggering, one covered in urine.  WHAT IS GOING ON??  Has anyone else notice this?  Is there a homeless shelter that turns them out on Friday's? 

Loitering and drinking is illegal, so of course call the police.  I don't know of a shelter, but Broadway has always attracted this activity.  They will "squat" in any accessible abandoned garage, like all of us, they prefer to live without "supervision".  Maybe they found one on or near that block.

I see a group of 4-5 often at the extreme northwest corner of the GoodTimes property.  In a case like that, tell the manager, and he'll have them move along.

Thank you for the reply.  This has been a problem 4 weeks in a row now.  I'm not aware of an abandoned garage that might be attracting them.  I think there must be a shelter somewhere near the neighborhood and as I understand it they have to leave the shelters from 8am to 5pm.  I have called the police to have them move on and contacted City Councilman Mr. Nevitt.  I'll post if I find out where they are coming from. 

I have noticed a lot more homeless people hanging around the neighborhood at different times, coming off Broadway ansd down the alleys. I do not think there is a shelter close by. One activity that has me very concerned  that i actually witnessed was a prostitute get picked up on South Acoma...the 2400 block.  Very lovely when out walking with kids! This particular woman carries a bunch of bags, hangs out at Len and Bills bar a lot and was walking north down South Acoma when she was approached by a pick up truck and solicited...she got in and drove off. She is very thin, with short reddish hair and always strung out. And always in this neighorhood...sometimes pushing a shopping cart. I am more than a little upset that this is happening within one block of my house. And this this person has made this her territory. Whenever I can I will try and make it to the wednesday commanders mtg to talk to someone about this. I always work then. Til then, keep an eye out for this activity too and call the police. I could not get the pick up truck's license plate fast enough...but will start to do so and take pictures of it if it going to be so obvious as this was.
