Dear friends,

One of the oldest shoestring factories in the area, Glencairn Mill on Cottage Street, has recently boarded up its windows and moved out.  As to whether they consolidated with New England Textile, the company's present owners, on Columbus Avenue, Pawtucket,  or moved to other plants in Georgia or Mexico is not known.

According to Elizabeth Johnson's historical website, the Glencairn Mill saw its greatest sales in the 1920's when each shoe made in New England had two and one half feet of shoestring for each shoe manufactured.

One cannot tell if the building is suitable for reuse.  The outside of the building is covered in gray shingle tarpaper .  However, the building stretches out through a good portion of Cottage and Saunders Streets.

Please find out if my observations are correct.

By the way there is a history on the three houses of Sam Slater

Samuel Slater's house and burial places for Slater and the Jenks family from the Pawtucket Research Center thru the Pawtucket Library..

Slater had three houses. The first being near the Slater Mill. It was torn down in 1924. The second house was at the corner of High and Main Street where the Peerless building, which now houses the Visitors Center and other agencies, is located. There is no record of when it was taken down but it was definitely gone by 1917. The third house (a brick mansion), which stood near the current Boys and Girls Club building, lasted past the thirties.    Samuel Slater is buried, along with other relatives, in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Webster MA.

The Jenks families original burial grounds were at the "Fields near the place at the Falls". That would have put them where the Veterans Memorial Park and the Bandstand now stand. Later, other Jenks family members were buried in Mineral Spring Cemetery.
