Mt Auburn

Mt. Auburn is one of Cincinnati’s oldest and most interesting neighborhoods. Built on one of the hills of Cincinnati, it features panoramic views, steep hills, and a number of steps that provide pedestrian shortcuts. As part of the uptown community Mt. Auburn offers many important conveniences; it is close to downtown as well as the university and the major hospitals; it has several bus lines and good walking routes; several schools are located in Mt. Auburn as are a number of organizations that offer a range of neighborhood services; there are several parks in Mt. Auburn, as well as playgrounds and green space; Mt. Auburn also houses a number of Churches of various denominations, some small and some large. Along the quiet and lush residential streets of Mt. Auburn can be found imposing Victorian mansions, modest single-family houses, and moderately sized apartment buildings.

Mt. Auburn Parks & Recreation

Mt. Auburn has several parks and recreation areas. INWOOD PARK, the largest park in Mt. Auburn, is located on Vine Street about two miles from the heart of downtown Cincinnati. The original land was once an old stone quarry and the first land acquired for the park was in 1904. The most noted feature is the lake. The main play area is on the east side of Vine Street, south of Hollister Street, where there is a large pavilion, a children's wading pool and a swimming pool. Built circa 1910, the pavilion is one of the earliest buildings existing in Cincinnati's parks. JACKSON HILL PARK is located at Eleanor Place and Dorchester Avenues in Mt. Auburn and offers panoramic views of the city to the west, southwest, and south. The park has a shelter, restrooms, a grill, and play equipment. Among the several neighborhood parks worth visiting are newly renovated HOPKINS PARK, located on Dorchester by Auburn Avenue, and MILTON STREET PARK, located between Milton and Boal in historic Prospect Hill. FILSON OVERLOOK, at Young and Ringgold, has an outdoor swimming pool and a baseball field, and there are newly renovated public tennis courts at LOSANTIVILLE TRIANGLE, located at Reading Rd and Burnet Ave.

The Steps of Mt. Auburn

There are lots of steps built into the hillsides of Mt. Auburn. For those who like to walk, the steps provide nice shortcuts, beautiful vistas, good exercise, and a reprieve from traffic. Some steps are very long, like the MAIN STREET STEPS (from Main St to Dorchester by Jackson Hill Park, crossing Mulberry, Goethe, and Dorsey), the YOUNG STREET STEPS (from Corporation Alley to Pueblo, crossing Milton and Boal), and the HIGHLAND STEPS (from Highland/Liberty Hill to Reading). Others are shorter, such as the many steps connecting Mulberry and Peete St, the Broadway and Hiram steps in historic Prospect Hill, the steps between Bodmann and Dorchester, by Josephine, the Earnshaw steps leading down to Reading, and the steps connecting Eleanor with Gage St.
