NIA (PURPOSE)

"To make as our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness."

PURPOSE

The primary purpose of the Nia Performing Arts And Community Learning Center is to provide a place for the Umoja H.O.P.E. Performers to continue developing their skills in the art of dance and theatrical performance, and to introduce and recruit other youth and adults into kinetic art, modeling and acting techniques.

The Performing Arts are valued and viable art forms. The Performing Arts are good for the body, the spirit and the mind. Through various performances, the awareness of the Performing Arts and its contributions to our culture is heightened as the public's consciousness of the Performing Arts is raised. It is our desire that the results of the accomplishments deriving from the Nia Performing Arts and Community Learning Center will provide enthusiasm and motivation to others, and will ultimately serve as a vehicle for learning, creating and expressing the validity of the Performing Arts.

OUR DESTINY

"Our Destiny.... is in our own hands. If we find, we shall have to seek. If we succeed in the race of life, it must be by our own exertions......."

Other purposes of the NIA Center include:

* To serve as a place of operation and facilitation for the various programs and projects                      initiated by United  H.O.P.E. CDC, Inc.;
* To be a catalyst for change in the overall community as a collaborative resource for other organizations and agencies working to improve the quality of life in the Park Heights Community and the overall city;
* To educate, up-lift, transform and restore harmony to the family system.
* To be a gathering place and resource center for disseminating and exchanging information pertinent to the community through meetings, workshops, lectures and forums and;
* To be a safe gathering haven for inner-city youth, adults, and seniors to interact and engage in positive activities.

Each one of us has a responsibility to see that changes are wrought educationally, politically, socially, spiritually and economically in our communities. Through a collective collaboration of efforts, and a maximizing of our resources we can accomplish goals that will strengthen our families and empower our communities.
