Governor Cooper Signs Three Executive Orders to Help Struggling North Carolinians and Boost Economy

Extensions of Executive Orders on evictions moratorium, processing unemployment benefits and to-go cocktails will continue to provide relief to families and economic support amid pandemic.

 

Enrollment for Medicaid Managed Care Underway

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced the official launch of open enrollment for NC Medicaid Managed Care which runs through May 14, 202. Beneficiaries can enroll online, by calling the NC Medicaid Managed Care Call Center at 833-870-5500 (TTY: 833-870-5588) or through the free NC Medicaid Managed Care mobile app available on Google Play or the App Store. They can also use the mail-in forms sent to them in the enrollment packet.

 

COVID-19 Support Services Program Connected More Than 35,000 Households With Needed Support to Help Them Isolate, Quarantine

Through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Covid-19 Support Services Program more than 35,000 households received relief payments, food, transportation to and from testing sites or additional supports to help them isolate or quarantine during the pandemic.

The program — which was set to end when all available funds were spent — is winding down this month, which means no new services can be requested. As the program ends, NCDHHS is celebrating its partners and the results of this innovative initiative.

 

North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program Gets Fund-raising Partner

A new opportunity to support the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program will help repair or replace damaged historical highway markers.

The North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program has partnered with the non-profit North Carolina Literary and Historical Association to establish a historical marker maintenance endowment fund.

 

First in Flight, First in Art: Five of Nine Winners of National Aviation Art Contest are from N.C.

Five North Carolina students are soaring after their artwork earned them top honors in the 2021 National Aviation Art Contest, as well as a chance to compete in an international contest.

Put another way, more than half of this year’s national winners are from the Tar Heel State.

Internship season is in full swing and The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) HBCU/MSI Program is seeking enthusiastic, sharp, teachable, students interested in working with us this summer to learn about the transportation industry, solve problems, and share their insight.

COVID-19 Vaccines: MythBusting from a Political, Legal, Medical and Religious Perspective

VolunteerNC, NC Strategic Partnerships and the NC Center for Nonprofits have assembled a panel to address the misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines. Join us on Tuesday, April 6, at 12 noon for our special Lunch & Learn, COVID-19 Vaccines: MythBusting from a Political, Legal, Medical and Religious Perspective.

Our panel includes Congressman Greg Murphy, MD; Reverend Paul Langston; C. Grainger Pierce, Jr., JD; and Dr. Teresa Duncan. Our panelists will participate in a round table forum and answer any questions you may have. As community leaders, we hope you will disseminate this information within your networks and correct any misconceptions so that all North Carolinians can make informed decisions.

 

Tar Heel Tales: Alma and How She Got Her Name

Alma has six names—isn’t that TOO many? After author-illustrator Juana Martinez-Neal reveals the family stories behind those names—Alma comes to think, perhaps, they might be a perfect fit after all! Listen along, then learn a way to tell your own family story. 

Ages 5 and up; parents are encouraged to participate with their children during the program

This virtual program is for individual children and families and is designed to make learning history fun and interactive. 

 

Mindful Museum: Virtual Poetry Hour

Wednesday, April 7, 2021

7:00 p.m.

Join writer-scholar Jameela F. Dallis to write poems inspired by the Museum’s collection. Ekphrasis means description in Greek, and ekphrastic poems are often vivid descriptions of works of art. Through grounding exercises, guided reflections, and writing prompts, participants respond to works of art, encountering their own creativity through language. Discussion and sharing encouraged. For ages 16 and up. Ends at 8 pm.

 

History + Highballs: The Halifax Resolves

7:00 p.m.

Presenters: Larry Armstrong, Chair, Historic Halifax Restoration Association, and Vann Evans, Audiovisual Materials Archivist, State Archives of North Carolina.

Help us honor the anniversary of North Carolina’s Halifax Resolves as we dive into the fascinating events that resulted in North Carolina being the first colony to move toward independence from England. Armstrong will introduce the resolves from a historical viewpoint; afterward, Evans will take a special behind-the-scenes look at archival items—including notations in the minute book of the 4th Provincial Congress that met in Halifax—related to the resolves that exist in the state’s archives.

 

Ken Burns – The Gene Special Virtual Screening

The Gene: An Intimate History, a major new documentary from Ken Burns and Barak Goodman, tells the story of the stunning revolution in genetics that is transforming medical science through the experience of patients and scientists leading the search for cures to some of the world’s rarest and most complex diseases.

North Carolina Litter Sweep: April 10-24

Traditionally scheduled for the last two weeks of April and September, Litter Sweep is the N.C. Department of Transportation’s biannual statewide roadside litter removal initiative. Residents throughout the state participate in local efforts to help clean up North Carolina's roadways.  

In addition to volunteers, NCDOT maintenance crews devote one week of their time to pick up litter and collect orange bags placed on the roadsides by volunteer pickups. Volunteers are provided cleanup supplies, such as reversible orange/blue trash bags, gloves and orange safety vests,??‹ from their local NCDOT County Maintenance Yard office.
