County and Historic Landmarks Commission to Solicit Qualifications and Proposals for Parcels in Camp Greene

Tomorrow, the County will begin the Request for Qualifications phase as it works with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historical Landmarks Commission to identify a prospective owner to purchase and develop two County parcels — the Historic Dowd House, 2216 Monument St. and former Fire Station #10, 2136 Remount Road — in the Camp Greene neighborhood of west Charlotte.

During this phase, the County will accept statements from those interested in purchasing the property. The most qualified respondents will be invited to submit proposals for development during the Request for Proposals phase.

The Dowd House served as the headquarters of Camp Greene, which was a United States Army training installation during World War I. The former Fire Station #10 opened in 1957 and served as a City of Charlotte fire station for many years. 

A condition of the purchase of the Dowd House states that the public maintain access to the property and wartime memorabilia housed at the location.

The County owns two additional parcels at the site that will continue to be owned by the County and used as open space, should the Dowd House and former Fire Station #10 be sold.

Annual Charitable Giving Campaign Begins Today

Today, Mecklenburg County launched its annual charitable giving campaign, which runs through Oct. 25.

County employees will be able to pledge support to 79 nonprofit organizations in our community that provide Health and Human Services, Arts and Science and Environmental services.

This is a great opportunity for employees to lend a helping hand. Even the smallest gift can make a big difference to our local nonprofit service agencies, and our community.

I will provide an update on our employee participation percentage at the end of the campaign.

Community Support Services Gears up for Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2018

Every October, advocates across Mecklenburg County come together to raise awareness about domestic violence. Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) provides an opportunity to educate the community on the pattern of abusive behaviors that alter the lives of too many of our neighbors, friends and families.

Community Support Services (CSS) has been working hard with various partners across the County to ensure that victims and survivors are supported, and awareness is raised. To kick off the month, the Wells Fargo’s Duke Energy Center will be lit purple. Following that, the month is jam-packed with many community events, including corporate presentations, staff training, fundraisers, fashion shows and an awareness march.
