Black Lives Matter Coming to a Street Near You?

Posted in: Madison Park

CHARLOTTE — As protests continue across the country in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police in Minneapolis, Tryon Street in uptown Charlotte will have “Black Lives Matter” painted onto the asphalt Tuesday.

Artists, collaborating with the City of Charlotte, Charlotte is Creative, Brand the Moth and BLKMRKTCLT, began taping off the letters just after sunrise in the heart of uptown, on Tryon Street between 3rd and 4th streets.

CLOSURE ALERT: South Tryon Street is closed between 3rd and 4th streets and is expected to reopen at 7:00 p.m. Please be cautious in the area and seek an alternate route if you are traveling by motor vehicle.

A similar project was conducted last week in Washington D.C., and in Raleigh, artists painted “End Racism Now” on a downtown street

People keep asking me how much does this cost- The city is paying participating artists $500 per letter. The city is also purchasing supplies. It is fully covered by savings from the FY20 Placemaking budget #CLTCC
