County Announces Park and Recreation Phase 2 Reopening Plans

5/26/2020

Mecklenburg County has announced COVID-19 Phase 2 reopening plans for Park and Recreation. The plans include gradually reopening park amenities while adhering to CDC guidelines and maintaining the health and safety of employees and customers. Phase 2 plans are as follows:

Effective Saturday, May 23, County driving ranges will be open. County golf courses, parks, nature preserves, and greenways also remain open.

Park and Recreation has revised its summer programs. Effective Monday, June 15 through Friday, August 14, the department will offer summer camps with limited slots. The Park and Recreation Nature Preserves & Natural Resources Division will also offer summer programs in July and August. Registration details will be available at ParkandRec.com.

In mid-June, Park and Recreation will open the Aquatic Center during the week (Monday – Friday), and Double Oaks pool will be open on the weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Spraygrounds remain closed.

The Governor's Order (North Carolina Executive Order No. 141) regarding Mass Gatherings for outdoor activities allows for no more than 25 people to gather and still adhere to social distancing. In compliance with the Order, sporting fields and courts (baseball, multi-purpose, and basketball) will not be reservable for practices or games. Tennis and pickleball courts will remain open.

The department will continue to have port-a-johns and handwashing stations available for public use until further notice. This increases social distancing and provides a safer alternative than reopening public restrooms.
