Campaign Signs Illegal City Street 11 feet From Curb

Posted in: Madison Park

Good Morning Adopt a Street Participant,

Happy Friday! Thank you for all of the amazing work you’ve put in this year- we’ve already broken records for volunteer hours and trash collected.

We’ll have more on that in a later e-mail; in the meantime, here are two quick updates on the program:

  • Campaign Signs: It’s election season, which means that campaign signs are popping up throughout the city. If these signs are in the Right of Way (within 11 feet of the street) on your street adoption, you have permission from Code Enforcement to remove them. However, Code Enforcement would like to know when these signs are in violation. Thus, if you’re comfortable holding on to them, please let me know that you’ve collected the signs, and I’ll put you in touch with a Code Enforcement officer to come collect them from you. If you’d prefer not to collect them, you can call 311 to report signs in the Right-of-Way, and a Code Enforcement officer will be dispatched to investigate. Please note that this only applies to City-maintained streets.

  • AmeriCorps: Keep Charlotte Beautiful is currently looking for a talented individual to serve as its full-time Engagement and Education AmeriCorps Specialist for the 2022-23 service year! Kind Regards,

You can call 311, or enter in the 311 system under Illegal Signs Charlottenc.gov any you see in the city.  It is quick and easy.  The onlie system is open 24/7.   311 operates only during certain hours for calls.

All City streets are forbidden to have any sign within 11 feet of curb, in medians, on bridges or in city property.  That is other than official DOT approved road signs.

State maintained roads in Charlotte for the last several years operate under a different law duing election cycles.  Campaign signs on state maintained roads must be 3 feet off curb.   Where there are in front of retail business they must obtain permission from owner.   Signs should not be in medians, or on corners and must meet certain size standards.   Citizens can call any sign in they believe is i violation of the sign ordinance in Charlotte.  If it is on a state maintained road the state will investigate it if a campaign sign.   All other signs on state roads are handled by 311 codes.

Keeping signs out of the public right of way is Keeping Charlotte Beautiful.

Madison Park maintains Tyvola Road and Seneca Place.   We have pulled thousands of signs over the last nearly 2 decades of adopting those two streets.

We also have picked up hundreds of bags of trash during that same time frame.

Sign rules apply in residential neighborhoods.  No signs realtor, yard sale, campaign etc. should ever be within first 11 feet of curb or aka Public Right Of Way.

Fines by code for violating ordianace is $100 a sign!
