Upcoming Events and Engagement Opportunities

 

Emergency Preparedness Workshops

Life can be unpredictable; unfortunately, disaster can strike at any time. There are, however, steps you can take to be better prepared. The Housing & Neighborhood Services Community Engagement Training team has partnered with the American Red Cross to help you and your neighbors become “Red Cross Ready.” This three-part workshop series will help you understand, prepare for and respond appropriately to disasters. Join us as we learn lifesaving emergency preparedness skills.                                                                            

Workshop schedule:

  • Home Fire Safety (October 14, 6 to 7:00 p.m.) - October is Fire Prevention Month. This workshop will discuss how to prevent home fires, escape from a home fire and how to recover if you are personally impacted by a home fire. 
  • Winter Storm Safety (November 4, 6 to 7:00 p.m.) - Learn how to protect your family, pets, and home during a winter storm. 

Workshops will take place via Zoom. Registration is required. You must individually register for each workshop you would like to attend. Online and call-in access instructions will be emailed to registered participants prior to the workshop.

 

Beautification Grant Pre-Application Workshop - October 20, 5:30 p.m.

Keep Charlotte Beautiful (KCB) is currently accepting Letters of Intent for its Beautification Grant, an annual opportunity that awards up to $5,000 for community beautification projects. This competitive grant is open to neighborhoods, businesses, nonprofits, schools, and individuals citywide. Projects must fall within the four tenets of Keep Charlotte Beautiful: litter prevention, waste reduction and recycling, beautification, and community greening. Attend this workshop for more information about these principles, project ideas, and how to apply. 

This workshop will take place via Zoom. Registration is required. Online and call-in access instructions will be emailed to registered participants prior to the workshop.

 

Introducción a CharMeck 311- November 17, 6 p.m.

 

CharMeck 311 is the customer contact center that provides information on City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County services. CharMeck 311 can assist with water service problems and billing questions, reporting code violations or requests for non-emergency police services and much more. Join us to learn about the many ways CharMeck 311 supports Spanish-speaking residents.

 

This workshop will take place via Zoom and will be delivered in Spanish. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions. Registration is not required. Helping Out Mecklenburg Homeowners with Economic Support (HOMES)

The HOMES program offers qualifying Mecklenburg County residents an economic assistance grant that helps reduce the cost of owning their homes. Whether your home is fully paid off or you currently have a mortgage, a HOMES grant of up to $340 can help you breathe a little easier. New applicants and previous recipients are encouraged to complete and submit the easy, one-page application by October 31.

Who is eligible for the HOMES program?

Mecklenburg County homeowners who have:

  • Lived in their home for the last three years
  • A qualifying total household income level
  • No more than one delinquent tax bill in the last three years

There is no age requirement and your house does not need to be paid off. See www.mecknc.gov/4HOMES for a full list of eligibility requirements. Applications can be obtained online.

 

Small Scale Development Lecture - November 4, 6 p.m.

 

Main Street America’s UrbanMain program has started its next phase of revitalization programming with the City of Charlotte and Historic West End Partners in the Beatties Ford Road/LaSalle commercial district. In this upcoming phase, UrbanMain is partnering with Incremental Development Alliance to provide technical assistance for small real estate developers interested in investing in and developing the corridor. Register for a virtual informational session taking place on Thursday, November 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. 

 

 

Drive-through Community Candy Drop - October 30, 2 - 4 p.m.

 

Ten Charlotte Fire Department Stations will host Candy Drop events on Saturday, October 30. This is a drive-through event only. Participating fire stations include: 

 

  • Station 1 - 221 N. Myers St. (Central Charlotte): Enter off 6th Street stay on N. Myers Street, nearest the side driveway (do not lock bay doors), exit onto 5th Street. Follow directional signs.
  • Station 10 - 2810 Wilkinson Blvd. (West Charlotte): Pull into the driveway via gate, circle the parking lot to exit. Follow directional signs.
  • Station 18 - 2337 Dr. Webber Ave. (North/West Charlotte): Enter off Senior Drive, stay on Dr. Webber Avenue, nearest the side driveway (do not block bay doors), exit onto Beatties Ford Road. Follow directional signs.
  • Station 31 - 3820 Ridge Road (North Charlotte): The candy drop will be on Shelley Avenue. Follow directional signs.
  • Station 35 - 1120 Pavillion Road (North Charlotte): One way, pull through the front driveway.
  • Station 36 - 2325 W. Mallard Creek Road (North Charlotte): One way, pull through the front driveway. 
  • Station 37 - 13828 S. Tryon St. (South Charlotte): One way, pull through the front driveway.
  • Station 39 - 8325 Providence Road (South Charlotte): One way, pull through the front driveway
  • Station 40 - 9720 Harrisburg Road (East Charlotte): One way, pull through the front driveway.
  • Station 42 - 5620 Central Ave. (East Charlotte) Media Location: One way, pull through the front driveway.
