Tell your senators to support the Monarch and Pollinator Highway Act.

Martin,

There’s a simple step we can take along roads and highways in your state to help struggling monarch butterflies—and all our native bees, butterflies, and birds: fill the green spaces adjacent to the miles and miles of these roads with native flowers and grasses to provide crucial habitat!

A new bill in Congress will help states establish and maintain wildlife-friendly habitats along state-maintained roadways. Please tell your senators to step up for monarch butterflies, bees, and birds by supporting the Monarch and Pollinator Highway Act.

Monarch butterflies and so many of our native bee species have experienced alarming declines over the past few decades. Western U.S. monarch butterfly populations alone hit a record low in 2018, with a researcher describing the drop as “potentially catastrophic.”

And our bees are in trouble. One bumble bee species has been pummeled so hard by habitat loss, disease, and the widespread overuse of bee-toxic pesticides that it has disappeared from almost 90 percent of its historic range over the last two decades.

Friends of wildlife like you can help TODAY by sending a message to senators about the urgent need to establish and protect safe habitat for butterflies, bees, and birds along our roadways.

The Monarch and Pollinator Highway Act will jump start native habitat along roadways in your state and across the country by providing grants and assistance to communities for help with:

  • planting and seeding of native, locally-appropriate grasses, wildflowers, and milkweed along roadways
  • reducing mowing in roadway areas to limit disturbance of needed nesting/overwintering and sustenance habitat
  • cutting the use of herbicides and pesticides

Thank you for taking action in support of meaningful, innovative steps towards building up wildlife habitats along our nation’s roads and highways—and helping to save monarch butterflies, native bees, and birds.
