The CNC Senior Activities Program is now in its third successful season of operation. Under the leadership of CNC Vice Presiedent and Director for Senior Programs, Anna Haskins Smith, the program is getting larger and attracting more seniors from the area and other communities than in previous years. "We love having the seniors and more are attending from different areas within our city", states Smith.
The California Neighborhood Coalition and the California Community Center staff--Terrence Moorman, Ron King and Clarissa LaMar, work hand-in-hand to ensure that the quality of life for seniors are met, not only socially, but also in the areas of health and physical education. Free lunch is provided. Participants can also catch a free ride to the California Community Center by boarding a van provided by Louisville Metro Parks that picks them up at the California Square Seniors Apartments, 1600 West Garland Avenue each Tuesday at 9:45am, beginning January 13, 2009 through May 5, 2009.
Bingo, bunco, pokeno, playing cards and aerobics seem to be the most favorite. Last year, besdies shopping each month, seniors also participated in other activities at other Louisville Metro community centers. They also visited the Underground Railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as the Muhammad Ali Center, downtown. This year, the J. B. Speed Art Museum as well as the Derby City Playhouse are some of the outside activities that appear on the agenda.
